TV show

Watch the show with the sound turned off.
  • What do you think the characters' relationships are based on the ways in which they are communicating?
    • The characters appeared to have loving relationships. When they were communicating they were making eye contact. There were times when they were sitting down and the men had their arms around the woman or the woman had their hands on the man's leg.
  • What are they feeling and expressing based on the nonverbal behavior you are observing?
    • You could tell when, they were in disagreement based on how their affect. Some were rolling their eyes, frowning, giving a mean glare, or turned the other direction. At the same time when they were in agreement there was smiling, laughter, touching, and hugging.

Now, watch the show with the sound turned on.
  • What assumptions did you make about the characters and plot based on the ways in which you interpreted the communication you observed?
    • I assumed the characters were loving and had good communication skills. I also assumed the characters showed care and concern for each other. I was right on some levels and on some levels I was wrong.
  • Would your assumptions have been more correct if you had been watching a show you know well?
    • No, I believe they would have been about the same if I was watching a show I normally watch.

  1. I was also surprise at some the emotion on the video when the volume was turned on. I also felt that if I was watching a show that I normally watched I probably would not have any assumptions about the characters.

  2. I found it amazing how much a person can determine about people in situations by focusing in and watching their body language without the element of sounds and other distractions when they are communicating. Participating in this exercise was helpful in recognizing nonverbal aspect of communication.

  3. Ayonie,

Thank you for sharing your experience! This was a fun assignment! I chose to do two different shows, one I was familiar with and also one I was not familiar with, but focused my blog on the show I was least familiar with. I was able to really grasp a better understanding of the characters roles in the show I was most familiar with. Almost in a new light! For the show I was least familiar with, I found it a challenge to really understand the plot. While I did seem to grasp the relationships and roles of the characters, I wasn't always sure what was exactly going on :-)!

  4. Hi Ayonie,
I had fun doing this assignment this week. I never would have thought to do this. This was a cool way to observe body language. The thought of doing it with sound was a great way to observe body language. The show I chose was the view. I don't watch it often but from what I observed it seemed like the co-hosts got along fairly well with each other.

  5. I'm wondering what is the name of the movie you watched. It seems as though body language plays a big part in communication.
